In June of 1955, the results of the Kasztner Trial in Jerusalem led to early elections and the fall of Israel’s third government. Who was Rudolf Kasztner, what was the nature of his contact with Adolf Eichmann, and why, a decade after the Holocaust, did proceedings in which the government was plaintiff have such a profound effect upon Israeli society? Professor Levey examines the controversial figure – who was head of the Zionist Movement in Hungary before WW II and the chair of the Vaada (the Aid and Rescue Committee) when the Nazis occupied Hungary in 1944 – and the repercussions of his controversial actions.

Zach Levey of the University of Haifa returns to University of Colorado Boulder as visiting professor in the International Affairs Program. Professor Levey was the visiting Israeli scholar at CU from 2009 to 2011.
