 WHAT'S NEW WITHU?

Dr. Jonathan Schanzer (MA, RIS '00) is an expert on the Middle East and the Vice President of Research at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD) in Washington, D.C. He previously worked as a terrorism finance analyst at the U.S. Department of the Treasury, where he played an integral role in the designation of numerous terrorist financiers. He is also a former research fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy.



Opeyemi Omisakin (Innovnation, RIS ’14) received a degree in Public Health from New Jersey City University in 2015 and is currently a Student Ambassador for New Jersey City University. He tutors in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and has worked as a Pharmacy Technician. In Opeyemi’s words, HU was a “life changer” and the “ultimate motivator to be better every day.”                                      


Ben Rabinowitz (RIS ’87-’88) attended Georgetown University for his MBA and is currently the Managing Partner and Founder of Amiti, an Israeli-tech focused Venture Capital firm that invests in early-stage Israeli companies that have extraordinarily high potential. He serves on the Board of Directors of Valens Semiconductor, Siklu and Amimon – Amiti Ventures portfolio companies. Previously, he served on the Board of Directors at Safend, which was sold to Wave Systems. 

LeMia Jenkins (MPH '11) joined the research team at Jackson State University as its new Director of Federal Relations in June. LeMia has extensive experience working on the Hill. Before coming to Jackson State University, she was Press Secretary/Legislative Assistant in the Office of Congressman Bennie G. Thompson. Previously, she had served as Press Secretary in the Office of Congresswoman Marcia Fudge. LeMia received a Master's degree in Public Health with a focus in Public Health Marketing and Communications from The George Washington University in 2012.
  Jeff M. Bernhardt (RIS ’82-83) is an educator, social worker and writer living in Los Angeles, California. He earned an MSW at USC and an MA in Jewish Communal Service at Hebrew Union College. His writing has appeared in the Journal of Jewish Communal Service, the Los Angeles Times and the Jewish Journal (Los Angeles), as well as in Jewish newspapers throughout the United States. His most recent book, For Every Season: An Introspective Guide to Renewing Ourselves during the High Holidays and throughout the Jewish Year, was published in July.

Stacy Blumenthal Leff (RIS '97-'98) was a winner of the Greater McLean Chamber of Commerce 2015 Business and Community Awards for Community Volunteers of the Year. She is currently an Independent Representative for Wildtree Herbs, a direct-sales gourmet food company. She is involved in numerous civic organizations, such as Food Bus and Mothers of North Arlington (MONA). She received a Master's in Public Administration from The George Washington University in 2003.
 

Lurene K. Gisee (RIS '89-'90) is an author and former journalist from the San Francisco Bay Area now living in Belllingham, Washington. She has extensive experience working for Bay Area news organizations and currently has a variety of blogs, including one based on her studies at The Hebrew University, genesisoutline.blogspot.com. She has shared some insights about her time at Hebrew U on our alumni website, along with a photo and a short piece about her return to Jerusalem in October, 2000. Lurene attended Chabot College, where she earned her B.A.

  Helen Epstein ('70) and her husband Patrick Mehr have co-founded Plunkett Lake Press in Massachusetts, republishing classics of non-fiction of Jewish interest. Their biographies and memoirs are in English and French and can be downloaded anywhere in the world to Kindles and iPads. Their ebooks include memoirs by Abba and Suzy Eban, Stefan and Friderike Zweig, Charlotte Wolff, Eva Hoffman, and Epstein herself. The collections includes works by Albert Memmi and biographies of Freud, Werfel, Herzl and Einstein.
