Professor Howard (Chaim) Cedar M.D., Ph.D., is a world-renowned cancer researcher and molecular biologist whose areas of specialization are gene regulation and expression and DNA replication. Professor Cedar’s groundbreaking investigations into the DNA methylation process have had a major impact on global cancer research, providing crucial information about how the placement of methyl groups on DNA could affect the way regulatory molecules interact with DNA sequences, and how the environment interacts with the DNA code.Professor Cedar is a graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and holds masters and doctoral degrees from New York University. In 1973, he immigrated to Israel with his wife and joined the medical faculty of Hebrew University. In 2003, he was elected to the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities. Among Professor Cedar’s myriad awards are: the Israel, Wolf, EMET and Rothschild Prizes. He is also one of Hebrew University’s first recipients of The Canada Gairdner International Award (2011), the majority of whose past honorees have gone on to win a Nobel Prize.
